CloudWays – Best Managed Cloud Hosting
Everyone is getting on the cloud, trying to do things like all the big guys are doing. I am talking about the people with Internet Properties like websites, Apps and Softwareare getting on the cloud. But, setting up a WordPress blog on a cloud infrastructure is hard, and then comes the maintenance.
It’s not something that you can do without proper training and a tech background. Even if you take the challenge of blogging from a Digital Ocean or Amazon Cloud server, you’re just burning your valuable time into something that you can get done at a low cost.
Subscribing to an IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service) provider like AWS (Amazon Web Services) or Digital Ocean for setting up a web app with WordPress, Joomla or any other CMS is not something that is recommended for everyone. It is complex, and without a dedicated server administrator, you’ll just be wasting your time and energy. Why not put those efforts in to the more creative works and get traffic and customers to your web-apps while someone else handles the technical aspects of your cloud hosting. This is where a PaaS comes into the picture.
A PaaS(Platform as a Service) provider will take care of all the technical aspects of cloud hosting for you. You’ll get a GUI based system to handle the server. You don’t need to worry about software updates and patches as that will be handled by professionals backstage. You just have to set up your web-app on their servers and let them worry about server performance and security.
The Cloud PaaS provider company that we’re going to talk about today isCloudways. It is a company with an ambition to make it easier for bloggers, designers and developers to get on cloud servers. Cloudways allows you to setup your website on cloud providers likeAWS, VULTR,Digital Ocean and Google Compute Engine (GCE).

As I told you earlier in the article, Cloudways is a Platform-as-a-Service provider. They have integration with all the servers of AWS,VULTR, GCE and Digital Ocean so they can easily provide you with cutting edge cloud services with the ease of use of a simple platform. There UI is very straight forward and easy to use, we’ll discuss about that in this post and find out the pros and cons of this growing company.
What all Web Apps can we deploy with Cloudways?
At the time of writing this article, Cloudways supports the following web applications:
- Multiple WordPress
- PHP Stack
Now, this might not be a long list and you might not be able to find your application of choice here, and no, there is no work around to installing something else unless it is included in the list by Cloudways.
However, to install any other application not present in the list, you can set it up through PHP Stack (if the app is PHP based).
This is a major limitation on Cloudways, but if you’re a blogger like me who just has his world in WordPress, then trust me, Cloudways is the way to go if you’re looking to get on a cloud.
Should I Shift to Cloud from conventional web hosting?
If you are a small time Internet Entrepreneur, then this might not be the right time for you to go cloud. If you believe in your growth and you’re already doing great with your Internet venture, then getting on the cloud will be the best thing to do. It’ll remove a lot of scaling problems that you might face, improve your application performance and the best part, it is flexible like your needs. So, when traffic spikes, you can scale up your servers without the site ever crashing.Keep reading to find out the process and price of going cloud with Cloudways.
Installing WordPress on Cloudways
#Step 1- Selecting your desired Cloud
In start you need to select your desired Cloud infrastructure. The thing is, you need to select a Cloud based on your requirements. Evaluate these clouds based on the number of global locations and plans available. For the sake of this we’re selecting Digital Ocean.
#Step 2- Selecting Your Application
Select WordPress from the list of applications.
#Step 3- Select Your Server Size
Are you just starting up and expect a gradual and predictable growth? Then start with a smaller server, and if you got great plans, choose your desired size. Use the recommendation feature to get a server suggestion based on website traffic.
#Step 4- Select a Location for your server
Selection of the location for your server can affect your website performance, make your selection based on the analytics of your website.
Now wait for your server to be initiated. The process takes a few minutes to complete, meanwhile you can watch the interesting video on the right side.
Once the server is ready to go. You’ll see a screen something like the image below.
Further process is a matter of exploring the Cloudways system, start by clicking on “Manage Server” button.
#Step 5- Add a Primary Domain and Set up your WordPress
Go to Application Management and add a Primary Domain. Set it up with the WordPress App then login to your WordPress, go to settings and change the web address there.
Now that I’ve taken you through the process of deploying a server and installing WordPress on it, let’s learn more about Cloudways.
Features of Cloudways Platform
Let’s talk a bit about what you’re getting inside Cloudways and how it can help you in your ventures.
- An easy to use yet Powerful control Panel
- Detailed Server Monitoring
- Unlimited Domains and Applications
- Managed Servers
#1.An easy to use yet Powerful Control Panel
If you click on “Manage Server” button you’ll see a decent looking control panel for your cloud server in front of you. Here you get access to almost all the aspects of your server via buttons. You don’t need to connect to your server through SSH every time, just login from here and you can do anything you want to with your server.
Below is a screenshot from the control panel that illustrates how some important features can be managed through a few clicks.
Vertical Scaling – Easy Scaling Up!
I really liked this feature, you can easily scale up your servers without any hassle.
So, if you face heavy traffic. Don’t worry about your site crashing, scale up your server and then start working on optimising your site for maximum revenues.
#2. Detailed Server Monitoring
With 15+ metrics to monitor, you’ll stay informed about all the important aspects of your server. Keeping an eye on these metrics can help you manage your server and take different steps to improve on the performance of your servers and Applications.
#3. Unlimited Domains and Applications
Unlike other service providers, Cloudways lets you setup as many websites on your server as you want. However, you got to keep an eye on the metrics that I mentioned above, putting too much stress on your server will lead to lack of resources. The user can install whatever application they want to install on their server.
#4. Managed Servers – No Worries!
As I’ve already mentioned in this post that Cloudways takes care of all the technical stuff related to cloud hosting so even a novice can successfully launch a web application on their platform.
You can start building your app on any infrastructure from their list. Even if you end up not enjoying that particular infrastructure due to any kind of issues, you can clone that app on a new server and map the domain for the new server. You’re done. You don’t even need to worry about migration.
The servers are regularly checked for security updates by professionals and software updates are done without you having to bother about a thing.
So Much More… I have only talked about some of the server aspects of the Cloudways service. There is a lot you need to explore in theApplication Management section.
From here you can manage SSL certificates, Backup and Restore, Domain and Cron Job Management etc.
Plans and Pricing
If you’ve been using shared hosting for a while, you’ll find Cloudways pricing model to be a bit different. Based on the Cloud that you choose and the server size you opt for, your monthly cost can go from $5.00/month (DigitalOcean) up to $1208.7/month (on AWS).
I recommend that you visit their Pricing page to understand the options that you have at your disposal.Cloudways Pricing Page.
The Free Trial Plans!
For something like Cloudways, get started with a free trial. See if the whole platform suits your requirements. Cloudways offers FREE TRIAL on all the clouds. The durations might vary, but enough for testing the performance and getting a feel of the environment.
Cloudways holds a good reputation for the support so even in the unlikely event of need for tech support or otherwise, Cloudways should help you out in no time.
Pros and Cons
- Easy to Use Cloud Hosting Solutions
- Perfect choice for non-tech friendly users
- Great Backup and Security features
- Unlimited Domains and Apps
- And a lot more…
- No root access (okay to compromise for the security though)
- Limited Applications to Install
I believe Cloudways lives up to their motive that is to allow anyone with minimum technical knowledge to get online with Cloud.
I guess, I have already written this review in a very friendly manner. Now, you must be having a good idea about the capabilities of Cloudways. So, let’s just wrap it up with a quick summary.
Cloudways is not a Cloud provider itself, it is a platform provider for users to build applications on other Cloud providers. The interface is easy to use and minimizes the technicalities of hosting an application on the cloud. However, the ease of use and security has brought some limitation along (see the Cons I’ve mentioned above).
In other words, Cloudways might not be the ideal choice for a hard core developer, they would anyways choose an IaaS over a PaaS. But, for the average blogger, designers and developers looking for a better way to get on Cloud, Cloudways offer amazing service and support at affordable rates.
